I know that's a silly question, but I everywhere I've looked in South Georgia that isn't Savannah, Columbus, or Valdosta is crime-ridden according to the stats. Those places may be too for all I know.

For example, I was looking at Hawkinsville, GA. I figured maybe it was the State Prison. Then I looked at Cochran and it was supposedly a haven of evil. There were others, South Macon, and others.

Is Cochran, GA. really that bad? Land was cheap there. It looks like you couldn't walk out your front door.

Go visit the towns. Really. Many of these small cities have not expanded the city limits in years which makes the crime stats appear inflated because only the old (now poorer and higher crime) areas are included. I wouldn't classify Hawkinsville or Cochran as dangerous as a whole. Are there bad sections of town...yep. Should you write off the whole place, not in my opinion. If you are looking for land, it is most likely not in the city limits and those stats don't take into account rural areas.

I’ve lived in Cochran since 2007. Came here from Lauren’s and I can say that Cochran is certainly not riddled with crime. It’s a very nice small town with a four year college. You need to visit and talk to the people here.

Not true at all. Cochran, Hawkinsville, Perry are very safe - as are Unadilla and Vienna.
By comparison - just watch https://www.13wmaz.com/ during the morning for the latest crime reports for Macon and W-R.

In a dot-sized town like Cochran, a bad neighborhood might just be a small cluster of homes on the fringes. I’ve driven through countless times, taken side streets to explore, and shopped at local businesses. It’s not a dangerous looking place.

Crime statistics seem to be magnified in smaller cities. One homicide in a town with a population of 1000 skews the values far beyond the actual threat.
