I hope this project really happens! Macon needs it. However, Macon will HAVE to address the homeless problem that is growing by the day. Most of the homeless are not local and there is a large "shanty town" of tents and trash all around the proposed site. Behind the Burger King and all along the RR tracks up to Rose Hill cemetery. The sheer number of homeless has quadrupled in the past 3-4 years.
If this deal falls through, it will be because of this problem and Macons inability to remedy it. This is not JUST a Macon problem but is all over the souths 1st and 2nd tier cities! If this issue is not corrected or at least addressed, I believe it will cripple local economies!
This is a very nice observation.
I too hope that they can address that problem- especially since most cities are testing affordable housing.

It is a serious issue. We have the Brookdale Center now as well as all of the other assistance downtown. Anyone who WANTS help can get it. It is time to crackdown on the shanty towns, remove and trash the debris and run off the ones who refuse help and want to squat on private property and trash all nearby public roads and areas. There are some who think a crackdown is cruel, but if help is offered and you refuse...that is on you. Time to move them out.
You are correct. To really maximize this property, this issue must be addressed.
UPDATE Renaissance on the River PROJECT revisited
While 2022 did not bring the anticipated groundbreaking for a major development downtown along the Ocmulgee River, a project proposal could come together in 2023.
