Hi,

I am french, coming in Madison next academic year (one week from today actualy), and I am looking for a place to live : I would like a furnished apartment, with at least one bedroom, more than 400sqft, and which costs less than 800$/mth. Does anyone know whether anything might be available near campus ?
thanks !
Alex

Probably not near campus. When I was a student (albeit 25 years ago...) most people found their apartments between January and March for the next school year. At this point, unless you are really lucky, you will have to live off campus and commute in.

You could check with University Housing to see if there may be room left in the dormitories.

This might also be a possibility.

Thanks,
of course I do not want to be in campus, but not too far either... 1 mile should be great.

Unfortunately, one mile from campus is still considered "on campus" housing and will probably not be available anymore. Your best bet will be to use the links provided to find a place to live within one mile of campus.

Are you aware that it's August 24th, and that school would start in a couple of weeks? Why didn't you think of this in April or May???

Here is another great option. It's for people who are leaving to go on sabbatical and need someone to take care of their home when they are away. Sometimes you can live in homes very cheaply!

thanks all of you, and I'm still happy to here advices.
I have been thinking about taking an appartment since I knew I would come in Madison (March). However, it would be weird to rent a place and not be able to live in it (I only come in madison Saturday). I do not know how you do in the US, but in France people rent something after at least one visit, and max 2 month before living in there (I took my last appartment two weeks before living in)...

I can see where it would be confusing to someone who is not from the area. Student leases actually start August 15th, but they sign the leases much earlier in the year (Jan - March usually). I'm surprised no one from the UW contacted you about housing when you were accepted, especially since you are from another country.

So, bottom line.... Other than the suggestions already given to you, you will have to plan on living off campus and taking the bus in for your classes.

I don't know why everybody get's so uptight about housing in Madison. It's not hard to come into town and find a place in a day or two. I saw for rent signs all over downtown today & it's after Aug 15th.

namerif, if you come in March don't worry (and I know you won't because many French are cool & calm). There'll be places looking for roommates and other places open. Worst case scenario you will have to live further out and take a bus.
