Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about moving to the West side of Madison. Unfortunately I have no idea about Hilldale neighborhood. Is it a safe place to live? Are there any parks for families with children nearby? How about shopping (grocery stores, etc)?

Yes, it is a very good and safe area, though it is hard to generalize without knowing which street you're moving to. There is a significant mall (Hilldale) there, and several grocery stores within a 2 or 3 mile radius. Same for parks.

I would stay away from the Camp Randal area if you have kids, it is very much a college environment (think congestion, noise and sidewalks smelling like bartime).

Hilldale is great! and getting better all the time... lots of parks, shopping, restaurants, and coffee shops, all in a very walkable community.

Well, I'm talking about Ascot Lane.

The nearest grocery stores are on Whitney Way (Copps) about a mile away, and University Avenue and Midvale (Hilldale Mall area) about a mile away as well. Madison has tons of greenspace so there should be quite a few parks right by your house. You will be very close to Van Hise elementary which is a great school. It's always a good idea to contact the police department in the area you are planning on moving to if you are concerned about safety. I recommend this to all of my clients. It will give you peace of mind and a much better idea as to what is really going on in the neighborhood instead of just rumor. Your best bet is to contact the neighborhood police officer, which can be found here West District - Police Department - City of Madison, Wisconsin
Best of luck with your move! Welcome to Madison!

I grew up (a million years ago) one block east of Midvale Boulevard near Hilldale. There's Lucia Crest Park in that neighborhood and you're also close to Hoyt Park.

Wonderful area. Wonderful memories.
