Madison/Dane county is dominated by liberal/progressives. That's known.
And they always harp on balancing their spending programs by taxing the "rich" and "corporations".

So why doesn't madison/dane county just tax the "rich" and "corporations" instead of continually raising property taxes on homeowners/renters? They have the power to tax, so why don't they?

I do not believe local governments can impose a local income tax. Now would they--even in Madison. Even more liberal Seattle voted down an income tax on the rich only.

It would be interesting to know if anything in the state constitution prohibits madison/dane county from imposing special taxes on targets they choose. I know some cities do, a "head tax" or the like.

the whole progressive agenda always has been socialism, to level the playing field by taking more from those that have and giving it to those that don't have as much.

So instead of an additional, punitive income tax on businesses and 'the rich', maybe madison could put in a special assessment on any commercial/industrial property and any single family residential property in excess of $250K?

Come to think about it, adding an "assessment for the rich and corporations" would directly target those they want to and not let them get out of paying it.

Please, just go to the P&OC forums where you can get your "swap political talking points" fix and stop bombarding the Wisconsin forums with your agenda posts.

Drover,
If the governance of madison say one thing, yet do another, and that directly impacts anyone living/doing business in madison, I should post that elsewhere?

I would be interested in how they manage their people and businesses.
I guess that may be a talking point to you, but not to everyone else.

It's clear from the tone of your posts that you're not as interested in a discussion about local issues as you are in partisan and/or ideological sloganeering. Putting a local slant on that sloganeering doesn't disguise it. So in that case, yes, you should go elsewhere.

Agreed. I don't know why the moderators don't reassign his threads and posts either.

If you consider housing and business expenses in a city to be "sloganeering", well, I don't know what to say to that. For some people, they don't care how much it costs to live in a place they choose. That's great for them. For others, how much they pay at the end of each month really does matter and this is where "all politics is local". There's a reason why people have been choosing to move outside of madison for a while now. I know business people that 30 years ago CHOSE to move their businesses outside of madison, but they at the time were madison residents.

I'd meet people that moved here and when they decided to ditch the apartment scene and get a house, they were surprised at the costs. Last time I lived in madison, people were fleeing where the local government was putting in section 8 people from chicago as yes, crime rates skyrocketed. Fleeing if they were lucky enough to be a renter instead of a condo/homeowner there that is. And I know people that also have chosen to live outside of dane county, yet commute to their govt jobs in madison.

All of the above is real. You may choose to call it what you wish.

Actually, I did. And so have many others, left madison and some even dane county. It's just an awareness that some people get, some don't some don't care.

I think it is clear to everyone that Hotbug's original post has nothing to do with the cost of living in Madison or Dane County, it is simply a means of pushing his/her agenda.
I don't like to usually make these things personal, but Hotbug has truly made the forum significantly less enjoyable. The way he/she interjects political views into every single thread has become very tiresome. I wish there were something that could be done.

It's OK to discuss local politics in local forums. As I just said in another thread in another forum: "Slag on the mayor all you like, but leave the President out of it. He doesn't live in this city." Same goes for 99% of the Congress.
