Hello All,
My husband and I are moving to Madison and we are having some trouble finding dog friendly apartment or townhome communities. We have two dogs; a lab and a boston terrier. I've found many complexes that allow cats, but not much for dogs. Can anyone suggest any helpful links or actual complexes - I was trying to stay on the East side, but at this point I'll look anywhere!
Thank you very much in advance
C

I used to work for a downtown area landlord, and one of the things that I would suggest to people looking for an apartment where they could have pets was to check with the Humane Society. At least a few years ago, the Humane Society kept a list of apartment complexes and landlords that were pet-friendly, and could refer interested parties to them.

You could also try contacting the Tenant Resource Center on Williamson Street. I don't know if they track pet policies of landlords, but they do serve as a sort of Better Business Bureau for apartment owners, and they can warn you of the ones you're best off avoiding.

Another source of info might be to just go to one of Madison's dog parks some evening or on a Saturday morning, and strike up a conversation with some of the other dog owners there. They may be able to give you some leads as well.

I wish you luck in your search. When we first moved here 8 years ago and wanted to rent a place while selling our home in Texas, it was really hard to find a place that would take a dog over 40 or 50 lbs (we had a Labrador, too). We finally found a townhouse on Loomis Circle on the far east side, but I'm afraid that I don't recall the owners' names, nor do I know if they still accept pets. Hope you find a good spot!

Thank you MWBookWorm. I never would have thought to check the Humane Society, but I certainly will now. I'll check into the Tenant Resource Center as well - I've heard many good things about the organization.

I've been checking Craigslist every day hoping to find a house or townhome that will allow dogs, but I'm starting to get a little worried so have been scouring the apartment complexes like mad.

Thanks again for your advice,
C
