Hi, I know this is a total long shot here, but I figured I'd try since you Wisconsinites have been incredibly helpful and friendly.
My hubby and I are moving to Madison in the next month or so (as previously posted in another thread). I think we will try to stay in a more reasonable range for a Madison home so we can get a second "cabin" on a cool lake or something like that. Maybe Lake Michigan.

The problem is this: I am not from Wisconsin, I'm from the west coast, and I have been trying to find a nice spot to get a cabin and Googling for "vacation home Wisconsin" is NOT working.
Is there a place, maybe within 2 (or so) hours drive from Madison that people think is a nice weekend trip spot? I would like it to be on a big lake, like Michigan or something. I would also like to stay under $400,000 which is seeming like it might be a problem in itself.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

Rachel

If you want to be on a "big" lake, your options are thus: Lake Michigan (a house actually on Lake Michigan will be ungodly expensive anywhere along the coastline), Lake Winnebego, Lake Poygan, Lake Pentenwell, and Castle Rock Lake. There's also the Lake Superior lakeshore in the northern tip of the state, but that's well beyond your 2-hour criterion. Of the remaining lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebego are the only ones that really qualify as "big" in the sense that you can't see the shoreline on the other side. The others are "big" by inner lake standards in that the shoreline on the other side is faint but visible. You might consider doing 2 for 1 and getting a lakefront home in Madison, or maybe on Lake Kegonsa just south of Madison in Stoughton? You can actually drive your boat from Stoughton to Madison via the lake flowage that connects Lake Kegonsa to the two lakes that surround downtown Madison (Monona and Mendota).

I'd look for a vacation home around the Minocqua area. Even though there are not giant lakes up there, there are a lot of them and the fishing is good. This is going to be about 3 hours from madison.

Otherwise if you are set on lake michigan then the only place to be is door county. you are probably a little over 3 hours getting up there.
