What are you guys talking about? I live in Madison and it isn't segregated in the slightest. There are a multitude of minority-majority neighborhoods in Madison, particularly on the south side. Are those the "segregated" areas to which you guys are referring? I live on the south side, so I would know.

Oh come on. Allied Drive area and South Side along Badger/Penn Park, in particular.

I have lived in some of the most segregated cities in the US-Detroit, Memphis, Houston, St. Louis (currently living here - and it is definitely the worst yet). I lived in Madison for 13 years. Though every city does have segregation issues (haven't been in a city that doesn't), Madison is probably the one with the least segregated I have lived in. It is a great city. Yes, very progressive and diverse. Yes, generally accepting of others (at least if you are left leaning - ha ha). Yes, it has a great quality of life. I loved it and would go back in a heartbeat. I highly recommend you put it at the top of your list. After moving 9 times, it is at the very top of my list. Though it does have segregation issues, after living in St. Louis for over 2 years, Madison is a breath of fresh air - a veritable utopia compared to St. Louis!

I love Madison. I often wish we still lived there, as it is a beautiful place. Hidden behind the progressive tags that Madison loves to flaunt are some facts that are terribly difficult for their leadership to acknowledge. Now I live in suburban Austin and it is much the same.

I would have preferred to stay in Madison but I couldn't find a new position opening fast enough. Overall quality of life is far better in the Upper Midwest compared to most areas of the US- even with a few negatives.

I don't think it really is, but it may seem that way because there just is not a very large population of african americans there. There are certain areas in the southern part of the city that are poorer and have more AAs than in other parts of the city. But they are not really concentrated in one spot. Your surburban areas are certainly going to be very white, there is no denying that.

But it is nothing close to milwaukee where you could drive through certain areas and never see a white person, then out in the surburbs and never see a black person. Nothing close to that exists in madison.

The schools are all pulling from a large enough area that there will be diversity at almost all of them.
