Like you said, it's probably best to look around the area yourself and make your own opinion.
When I was in Madison it was similar. The cluster of merit scholars was in areas zoned to West and Memorial HS. No surprise, in the more affluent areas.

Good day, I am NO Madison expert. I am more of a Chicago guy than a Madison guy. Much more so. My brother lived in Madison near Park Bank (east of the Interstate) for several years. He married and had 2 children. He thought THAT area was wonderful. But when he said a fist fight broke out at the table next to him at East Town Mall, coupled with the neighborhood blotter of crimes near that area, he moved to Waunakee. He is much happier there. So apparently north, south, west, east crime can happen anywhere.

Yes, that part of NE Madison tracks a lot less affluent, with a more transient population living nearby in apartments. More police calls there by the mall, but in no way would even that area be considered ‘dangerous’ by our standards.

damba, how are you? I've never been a Madison fan, and I mean NO disrespect to those who love Madison. Ive just always been a fan of more urban and ethnic areas, hence my love for Chicago. My favorite memory of Madison story: A good 20 years ago. I'm driving around. Finally I pull into a gas station and asked the workers: "Where is the Mexican NEIGHBORHOOD here in Madison?"..... They responded, "There's a Mexican store and restaurant down the street."

I have an outsiders question, does the beltine sort of act as a barrier of what people consider living in the city as opposed to the suburbs or the country? Sort of like in Milwaukee where yeah Wauwatosa and West Allis and West Milwaukee and Greenfield are technically suburbs but nobody really considers them suburbs. For instance I don't think I ever heard any refer to living in Stallis as living in the burbs, people just say Oh I live on 92nd St.

So in Madison is there a look down aspect of non city people who live outside of the freeways as being in the country or sticks? and most people want to be in the "circle" of Madison?

Not at all. Madison is different than Milwaukee in that regard. Most of the city of Madison looks suburban, so it blends together quite a lot.

It’s mostly a narrow minded complaint to stay away from people of a different socioeconomic situation. Ignorant stuff.

Todo bien aqui

Take a look at a demographic map of Dane County online and report back your findings.

Think ‘ethnic pockets’ (small) instead of full fledged neighborhoods.

Even looking at a ‘dot’ type map doesn’t mean much because it’s not delineated as solidly as parts of Chicago or Milwaukee you have explored thoroughly.

Example-
