Taking a job transfer and headed to Madison, recently single and not up for owning another home in the current market. Would like to be downtown where there is some culture, restaurants and uniqueness, not just college party scene, getting too old I guess or just not patient. Looking for nice upscale apartments or condos/lofts to rent....can anyone suggest any places to look at or areas? As it goes, and rightfully so, there is a lot of student housing, but harder to find rentals for professionals or at least I haven't found the webstie or who to contact yet.

Basset neighborhood - any good? Others?? Have looked at Tobacco Row (Basset) as a potential- anybody know anything on this?

I'll take all advice.

Thanks.

There are actually a lot of really nice places that are not student apartments in downtown Madison. Here's a couple websites I found. The Tobacco Lofts place looks pretty cool, very hip- good for a younger single professional like yourself.

If you want to have the ability to walk for your daily needs, then Downtown near the Capitol or University campus is where you will have be. But be warned: while there's a much balyhooed condo "boom" in Downtown Madison. most of the area is very collegiate in atmosphere. Read: you will be surrounded by people much younger than you.

If you're looking for an interesting neighborhood where you will have to drive places, but can still walk to a lot of places, then you might want to check out the Atwood neighborhood on the east side. Mostly adults around there.

Thanks for all the replies thus far - helping me out considerably. If you have anymore helpful hints please let me know! Thank you again.

Heard there was an unfortunate murder in the Basset neighborhood - is it a rough area or is this just an unfortunate incident?

Basset street is a nice neighborhood. I had a friend who lived there in a really nice renovated old house. I felt perfectly safe walking around there by myself at night. The murder was a random thing.
