First it was a proposed ban on plastic bags.

Now, a member of the influential Madison Plan Commission wants to ban the restaurant drive-through -- or at least restrict the ubiquitous symbol of America's auto-centric lifestyle.

news: Mike Ivey: Should Madison ban the drive-through?

This was a topic on my local talk radio station here this morning. It makes me embarrassed to tell people I once lived in Madison.

I've attended city council meetings in Madison, so I remember people at those meetings who would love to live in a city where all commercial streets were like State St., open only to buses and pedestrians. This would be a step on the slippery slope to that direction.

Eventually the tree-huggers will ban cars and busses. Commuters will be forced to ride bikes into the city even during Winter. Granted, there will be a lot more injuries of people losing it on ice while biking than driving, but, hey, that doesn't affect the powers that be.

Perhaps it's time for real people to take over the city government.

Don't these idiots realize how much they lose if they ban drive-throughs?

This is what you get when you elect a mayor who always brags that he is afraid to drive on the beltway.

I do not think it is that bad of an idea personally. It makes me proud to say that I was once a Madison resident. It is really not an inconvience, except to fast food junkies. I cannot even recall the last time I went to a place with a drive through.

I can't remember the last time I went to a hospital either.... seems like a lousy criterion for whether or not something should be banned.

There's a name for an ideology that tries to micro-engineer society: fascism. Its stripes are no more flattering if they are of the leftist variety than versus rightist variety.
