I am moving to Madison this summer and after searching online it seems almost impossible to find a rental that takes dogs, especially big dogs. I looked up the Humane Society, I always put in dog/cat parameters on my craigslist searches, and anything that does come up usually has <25 pound restrictions, or only one pet restrictions. HELP!!

This is one of the biggest companies in the downtown area and it has a "dog" search button:

MPM Rentals Search

What area are you looking for?

I'm surprised to hear this. I've been looking (very frequently) on craigslist for rentals in Madison for months and I've seen a ton of them that take dogs. We just signed a lease on a dog-friendly house with a yard, but I've also been surprised by the number of apartments that take dogs. What type of place, price range are you looking at? I ask only because maybe we've not overlapped on type of rental being searched for.

Oh, and also, I typically don't filter my craiglist searches, as sometimes people don't have that little "woof" box checked, but then the ad text will say something like "dog negotiable" or "extra fee for pets".

Yeah, I know a lot of places say "pet friendly" but it'll be cats or small dogs, or one dog, or two pets total. I have 3 pets, two dogs (one is 90 lbs) and a cat. I don't mind paying extra at all, but finding a place for my big guy has proved exceedingly challenging. So far I have pinned my hopes on MPM, so that's for advice Dairylander!

Ah, I see. I did see some weight restriction ads, but not a whole ton. It seemed also that landlords wanted to be able to approve the type of dog, particularly in regard to breed, etc. My girl is 65 lbs, but she's a standard poodle, so I have the no shedding thing going for me. Also, that's our only pet, so I see your dilemma a bit more clearly.

When we lost our cat, I grudgingly held off on getting another because renting is just so hard with multiple pets. Understandable I suppose, but too bad really. I wish you the best of luck!!
