Hi

We are hoping to move to Madison later in the year. I am English and my wife is American.

My wife works in Dental, preferably as an Office Manager or alternatively as a Dental Nurse or Front Desk. We believe that she has a good chance of finding work quickly.

My background is in product design for manufacturing companies, originally as a designer and laterly in design office management. I am less hopeful of finding something in line with what I normally do but hope that I can get work using brain rather than brawn.

Is there a general feeling of a lack of job opprtunitites in Madison in the current economic climate?

Can put you in touch with a couple who moved here from England. They are good friends of ours and have lived here for 5-7 years. They are not in the professions you mention, but might get you the local perspective. Contact me directly if you'd like.

The job market in Madison is softer than it's been in a long time, but still better than many other parts of the country. Your wife should have a relatively easy time finding a good position, but it may be more of a stretch for you to find something rewarding in your field. Manufacturing is not a terribly strong industry right now, and Madison has never been a particularly big manufacturing town even in the boom times.

If you have managerial experience, you might have better luck using that as a springboard into other types of management. Good managers are tough to find in any economy, and there is much about managing a design office that would translate into managing a marketing office, say, or a sales office.

Good luck in your move and your job hunt, and let us know how things go for you.
