We've been trying to get a feel for what kind of house we might be able to rent in or around Madison in the $1,500-$2,000 per month range. We've checked craiglist and some random realty and newspaper sites, but have found very few nice, reasonably updated 3 or 4 bedroom places. Almost everything I've seen looks like the kind of place where students would live- but not suitable for a family of four. We'd love to buy, but prefer to rent for the first year, since we don't have jobs lined up in Madison.

Are most of the rentals in Madison more geared towards young people who don't mind dingy accomodations, or are we just looking in the wrong places? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Decent rental houses are tough to find in the Madison metro. There are lots of marginal ones, but not what you'd find in the $1500-2000 range. There are tons of duplexes, however, that are 3BR and above within that price range.

Thanks for the reply! A duplex would be fine also, so long as it's at least 3 bedrooms and nicely updated. Any thoughs on where I might find these listings? As I wrote, I haven't really seen much on craiglist or the state. Thank you!

YOu may have to get on the ground and drive the neighborhoods to find rentals. Ive seen a number of whole house rentals primarily in the Monroe area, Westmoreland, etc. Nice houses too, though Im not sure what they would cost per month. Most of the times the signs are homemade so folks may be renting them out on their own and not with realtors.

If those areas are too expensive then perhaps around the Elver Park area or Fitchburg could have something in your price range.

What area are you going to be working at? I live in Wexford and there are a number of For Rent signs up around the neighborhood. Most of them are probably duplexes and some townhomes. Largeish homes with large yard space.

It's a lovely suburban neighborhood. Within an easy 10 minute drive to Target, West Towne Mall, Costco, Sam's Club, restaurants including ethnic ones, library, grocery, etc.

The elem school that Wexford is part of is Glenn Stephens. Close to some of the best scores in Madison with a much greater ethnic diversity of student body. My son is in K and I don't have any complaints about it (yet). His K teacher has been easy going and seems to be doing a good job.

Thanks for the advice- maybe we will have to drive the neighborhoods. Would all of the hoods mentioned above be good choices for a couple in their 30s with two young children (both under 3)?

I'm biased but just about any neighborhood on the west side fits the bill.
