What is it like living in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island in the off season...late fall, winter, spring....I imagine after the tourist season it is pretty quiet...what do the locals do?...Is there a sense of community and activity for those who live and work year round in the area?

Bar Harbor and Mt Desert Island in general is a year round community. There are more towns on Mt Desert Island than just Bar Harbor, and the island itself is close to other towns, with the largest town in the country, Ellsworth, being about twenty-five miles from Bar Harbor. Bangor is 50 miles from Bar Harbor, and that is the third largest city in Maine. The University of Maine, with its performing arts center is in Orono, another twenty miles or so. There is as much to do as anyone wants in the winter, with cultural, and community activities that go on all the time...and of course, if one has children, there are their activities in schools and churches, much like other places. Except in the towns of Maine, there is still a feeling of community that is largely missing in the more populated places in the country...the kinds of places that people who ask questions on this forum are from.
