People get way too hung up on racial make-up. It's not like Northern New England put a gate up to keep out minorities.........weather, geography, economic opportunity, culture, etc all play a part in the ethnic make-up of states. I'm sick of being force fed this "lack of minority population" propaganda by the media like we should feel guilty for not actively recruiting blacks (and others) to this state.
I've always been interested in this topic and I think it's a great one. Race is an important issue to those who could face discrimination because of their race. It's not about feeling guilty for not actively recruiting blacks (or any minority group). It's about whether the culture behaves in a manner that is restrictive and works to exclude blacks (and other minorities) from participating and thriving. This is the crux of the mater and what the OP is inquiring about I believe.

The weather and geography might be restrictive of course, but what about the attitudes of the people towards blacks?

I don't think so...........but what do you (or others) include in those "restrictions"??? Because stuff like hard (manual) work, knowing one's neighbor, direct/face-to-face communication, and a do-it-yourself thought process........are all historical hallmarks of the State of Maine. Those types of things are not discriminatory.........but might not appeal to certain segments of the U.S. population.

How did this go from 'racial tolerance' to massage therapy?

I'm giving a short answer because the post was completely random and a shot in the dark, with quite a bit of questionable english. It is a fact that there is simply not many massage therapist jobs available in Maine and it is a strange place to randomly move to for a possible massage therapy job. Why not Florida, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Texas where the city life is common as well as the spa and pretentious business practices of vanity are rampant. I would take the post seriously if this poster was a licensed chiropractor with a legitimate effort to move to another state.

Kingdomkz -However- how do you know said poster "perlamaria" is not a " licensed chiropractor? With such a brief intro, which could have been typed out on a phone, or put in the lingo of a casual forum/chat room- how could make the assumption that said poster is "Not" a licensed chiropractor.

And please- expand on what is a/your definition of a " legitimate effort to move to another state "??
What makes it " legitimate" ? More than they above sentences posted ??

What stated as a 'random' post by perlamaria- has now actually more fit a rigid or showing an assumption of possible underlying prejudice perhaps ???
( and adding actually that massage therapy is not just for " pretentious business of practices of vanity.." as you have stated... )

Have you checked how often she follows up on posts? Have you seen how many state threads she has posted in half-heartedly then disappears for a few months? HAVE YOU READ her posts?

Now you know how minorities feel on the states.

So are you stating that people from FL, NJ, NY, MA, CT and TX are pretentious and vain, and residents of Maine are not refined enough to "city life" to want a relaxing or therapeutic massage?

You seem provide a lot of statements and advice for someone not yet living in Maine. Most of which I would take with a grain of salt. I think you need a little time in the saddle before you're qualified enough to give someone advice about a state you do not reside in.
