i have had to make the trip to bangor three times so far this week- about the only real good to come of it is that i can report that the foliage this year is quite pretty, especially along route 9. from the looks of it i would say it would probably be peak through the weekend if not already. i was surprised about how much difference in color from one day to the next. seems a week or two early this year.

It's looking pretty down here too, in spots. I've noticed it most in the wet lands near more swampy areas, and along side the lakes, rivers and ponds.

I use this link to plan my weekend foliage rides:

I will have to take that drive this weekend, or maybe tomorrow, moving up from NH to Calais I was dissapointed with how little foliage there seemed to be, then someone said Maine was the pine tree state I am looking forward to the ride!

I would say this is a poor foliage year. The storm last night knocked a lot of leaves off the trees at a point where foliage was at 50% or less. I am sure the drought had something to do with it as well as the swamp maples just were not as robust red as they typically are.

It is not a wash just yet, but I have seen better foliage years.

Agreed. Too dry and the leaves fall off quickly after changing. Last year the leaves were still green the first week of October. Too wet! I have a huge rock maple that changes late. It's always bright orange in Mid October. There is a picture of it with a rainbow in some old thread from last year.

As you can see the color, nor the leaves are there.

Only the young, diseased and swamp maples are changing here. Most of the maples are still green. The ash trees are bare this morning but were beautiful at their peak a few days ago. We're on schedule here.

My observations are that we are about a week to 10 days later than what I have seen in the last few years.

My baseline is the fall of 2007, when I first came to Maine the week of the Autumn Equinox for a visit, and the trees were spectacular and just a bit before peak, I would say. All week they kept getting better.

This year, in the same areas in the Bangor area and a bit north), they have only begun to color well and I do not think they will be getting as colorful as previous years. The birch, for one species, is not getting the bright yellow but only turning brown and falling.

We did have our first real frost last night. The overnight low was 28 and the frost is definitely on the pumpkins this morning.

It depends where you are I think as to how much has turned. I have a huge maple that has just begun to turn red. Only a couple of branches. But this is typical of this tree. Many years we get our first snowfall before the leaves of this fall. It is prettier in this area than it was last year when the leaves just kind of turned brown and then fell. We may head to Greenville or Camden for a folliage drive. Most likely will be Greenville as Camden will still be pretty for a while and we can go later. I haven't been up Mt. Battie in years.
