more specifically the south end. I'm considering a move to there, but I've heard its a bad neighborhood. Is it really that bad? whats the history of the place? Would I feel uncomfortable living there? whats it comparable to? whats the rest of the town like?

I never used to care for Waterville, but a couple weeks ago I had some time to kill there, and drove/walked around for a couple hours. I really hadn't given it a fair shake. Great downtown area, very walkable. I like that they invest in their old buildings rather than tear everything down. Yes, there is the strip area out on Kennedy Drive, and over by the other exit too. But there is still alot going on downtown. They have rehabbed one of the old Hathaway buildings and it looks like they did a good job. There are a couple of nice parks in town. I think the south end is a little rough, but not totally sure about that.
Out of curiousity, does any one know what that big, old mill complex used to be, right across the river from downtown? Mardens has their central warehouse in part of it, but it's HUGE!
Also, what's that big old mill complex just outside of town on the way to Fairfield??

Waterville used to be a manufacturing town. As foreign competition took over and Maine became unfriendly to business the mills went dark. Waterville is enjoying a resurgence since Paul LePage was elected mayor about 10 years ago. The town is cleaned up and businesses are growing. Taxes are actually going down. The south end is also being cleaned up, but has a way to go. The big old mill could be the old Hathaway Short Company or an old paper mill depending on which building you mean.

Yes that's it! Thanks! I googled the name and then did a Street View. What is the story with that complex?

Nothing wrong with it at all. I generally don't mind strips as long as they don't end up sucking the life out of the old downtown. THat does not seem to have happened in Waterville.

The south end is tied with a couple of neighborhoods in Portland for the worst crime in Maine. KMD area is fine, though. There are a lot of great neighborhoods near there.
