Me too. I have to wonder if all the hidden taxes would compare to paying - say $11,000 in property taxes?

For one, you have to pay a kind of sales tax on your cars every time you register them, based on each car's book value.
And that's every year, not just the first time you buy each car.

I know - we used to have to do that in NC. My point being - will all the "extra" taxes that we outsiders get warned about equal the enormous amount of taxes we ge here in the Mid-Atlantic? Is it all relative in the end?

Well, I'm not sure if the jobs are why. Vermont has low paying, crummy jobs, and is a very expensive state. Maine has mostly escaped that, so far...

You know, people say it's the "weather" here that drives retirees away, but given how many retirees move to Maine, I think it's simply the expenses of living in VT versus elsewhere. ME has attracted retirees despite a cold climate.

Why do you always compare Maine to CT and CA? Maine is nothing like those. Why don't you compare Maine's taxes and COL and housing to a comparable state try TN or AR or KY. Why? Because Maine will lose every time to them.
If you move here from CT or CA or NJ I'm sure its better, but if you are actually from here the perspective is much diffeerent.
