I am seriously thinking about relocating to Madison in about three years after my kids get out of high school. I will be retiring with a $53,000 pension. From what I have read on City - Data I believe I could do well with that pension and maybe a partime job. I have been in law enforcement for 30 years and I am 54. I love Maine and have been camping in Jackman and Rangely Lakes over the years. I am also into wildlife photography. Could someone please give me your thoughts about Madison. I live in NJ and Madison is about the same size as where I live. I believe Madison is close to the wilderness and close enough for shopping which would make it an ideal town to live in. It looks like the cost of living is much cheaper there vs NJ. Please any thoughts about Madison would be great.

Thank you

Madison is a nice town on the Kennebec River. It is indeed next to the woods. It may seem like a wilderness, but it's a working forest owned mostly by timber companies. Madison is an easy ride up from the interstate, just far enough. Jackman is just up the road as you know with Bingham and The Forks in between. Great country with lots of lakes and rivers.

Maine is very popular with retiring LEOs and corrections people. They say we are "real people". We do what we say we'll do. We need people like you.

That is a very good pension. You should do very well in Maine

I moved to Maine as a retiree and like it very much, though my pension is much lower.

Maine's tax system, despite its bad reputation, is generally favorable to retirees on a pension income. Social Security is exempt and there is a 6,000 exemption for pensions (less social security). Also there are generous homestead and circuit breaker provisions to reduce the property tax burden. Many items important to retirees are exempt from the sales tax, especially groceries.

As for Madison, it is an especially nice place to live if you love tomatoes . . . Backyard Farms is located there and they grow greenhouse, hydroponic tomatoes which are shipped all over New England. Apparently Madison has very low electricity prices thanks to a municipally owned dam. However, I don't know if this also applies to residential electricity prices.

My greatgrandfather bought a farm on the Kennebec in the late 1800's. My family is still there. One has a vegetable farm. I took some pictures around there last year.

I greatly appreciate the responses to my question. Now I am getting even more excited with the thought of landing in Madison. We are going to do some camping at the Last Resort in Jackman at the end of June. It's great to hear that other law enforcement officers are also heading to Maine. Northern Maine Land Man is right, we do what we say we'll do. Will probably stop in Madison when we go to Jackman in June. Thanks again.
