I just changed my nickname to MainerWannabe because that's how I would like to be known in this fine forum. Used klklkl34 for a little while, but after interacting with some of you, reading you clear and precise answers, and just the general good will from you, I just had to change it . As I was changing it, it occurred to me "why"... Why Maine? Why this fascination with this northernmost New England state so far away from where I live now? I hear a lot of talk about the "freedom" you enjoy but I can't define this "freedom" or understand why you'd have more "freedom" than in the other states... I asked about the food also, because well, that's my profession, as I work with wines. Asked about the nice towns I would like to live. There is something about Maine, an attraction, a deep desire to live amongst you, to be part of it. But why is it?
What is the magic about Maine that casts its spell on so many?

What do you think of fruit wines?

I have relatives out West who produce wine grapes, and a few friends who are hobby wine makers [their own small vineyards, etc]; among them the idea of using fruit horrifies them. "Wine only comes from grapes"

However after having sampled a few of Maine's local 'wines': cranberry, pear, peach, apple, and blueberry we have found that we like these fruit wines.

my boss opened a winery a few yrs ago. He's doing well, and several others have opened in the area. (Bradford co, PA)

Have to see if I can find some cranberry wine. I love cranberries.

As for the 'why Maine' question-I've never lived there, also a Maine wannbe, I guess-but I think the freedom is in the accepting attitude. Even if you're an a55hole, they acknowlege your right to be that. Overall, it makes it easier to focus on what you want to be or do. You don't have to dress in fancy clothes-nobody cares. Big houses, fancy cars...who cares? You're accepted for you.

I have a bottle of sparkling cranberry wine in the fridge, chilling for when I get back from work Fri. night. It is from the Winterport winery
I have not had the chance to visit there yet, but had some of their blueberry wine, I believe it was, at the Beekeeper's house one day and when I discovered that the place I get my propane bottles filled, which is also a redemption center and retailer for beer and some wines was now carrying some of their wines, I grabbed a bottle of apple (surprisingly dry... very nice) and the cranberry.

I love them! I think of them more as a "dessert kinda wine" I've thrown a dinner party once that for dessert we had chocolate lava cake with raspberry wine DELICIOUS! I've also done a catering gig where I paired cheeses & nuts with a variety of fruit wines and Champagne, (I think fig was one of them... people went berserk!) I'll start a thread about wines in ME later on)

I makes a lot of sense! Coming from CA of course I was thinking in terms of politics... But it is much deeper and yet simpler than that. It is the accepting attitude of its people. Indeed I felt that in my many vacations to ME. It's refreshing and sure it's a lesson for the "keeping up with the Joneses" attitude here in LA and in CA in general. In LA case the Joneses are Hollywood stars and people get in a lot of debt to prove they are just as good as these unattainable personalities.
How silly really. I love Maine!

As a California native myself I can understand your concern

Default Maine vs LA

While Maine is wonderful(how could it not be for me to pick up everything and move 600 miles away from everything I know>?). But you are in for some really serious culture shock to move from Los Angeles to Upstate Maine. Quaint looking little towns may be great but you may feel less like that when you have to drive a good 6 -15 miles to get to anything. And very little that you have at your fingertips in LA is available in many parts of Maine, and in no places at all.

My daughter moved from Hadley, MA to SF and its taken her 3 years to just even begin to feel comfortable.
