It's a lot further. You must be driving a Prius.

Ha! I wish. I've got an old Corolla. $30 a week gets me from Brunswick to Yarmouth, no problem.

We live in upstate NY and are trying to decide between moving to either Maine (between Freeport - Kennebunk) and Colorado (Fort Collins, Col springs). They both seem to offer so much for so different reasons. The bitter cold and family pulls us to Colorado and the Ocean and Schools pull us to Maine. Just out of curiosity why are you deciding to move to Maine besides the $5 lobster and job op.? In our search Falmouth, Cumberland, Kennebunk, had great schools. What are other motivating factor for you to move away from Colorado? Btw, In my opinion you can't go wrong with Maine. Portland is awsome and the people are really great. All about organic and local foods, big art scene and breath taking coastline. I'll you in on a great camp ground. Hermit Island in Phipsburg!! Best of luck.

According to the FBI, Maine is the safest state. That is a big decision factor for many families.

Sorry NML. The fact that the "state" has low crime has no bearing on the folks who are living IN the states higher crime neighborhoods.

As much as it is nice to hear that...Unless I was running some kind of security company or personal protection agency that was dependant on a broad high level of crime that information could not be any more useless.

And though I might be looking at it from the wrong angle I have posted many times crime comparison stats showing many zip codes that are located in higher crime states that have less crime then many of our cities and towns.

The biggest difference in those two locations is size.

Maine still has a small town feel in most communities. From downtown Portland (Maine's largest city) you can be in the boonies within a half hour.

Both Fort Collins and Colorado Springs are big cities these days. In fact, driving up the interstate, you never are really out of town from Fort Collins through Denver and down to Colorado Springs. It's solid urbania intermixed with bits of suburbia.

Don't get me wrong. As cities go, both Fort Collins and Colorado Springs are nice cities. But they are cities. Most of Maine still has a "small town" community feel.
