I actually don't want to hide my gun. I'd prefer to have it out. We are allowed to do this in Maine?

Sure, well OK.

But you could always accidentally blunder into each other.

And i would hope to be armed whenever going into the woods (or going anywhere, for that matter--so long as it's legal).

That said, i'd rather worry about blundering into a moose with a calf than having alligators around.

And I've heard of more people in Maine being mauled by loose dogs than by loose moose.

You are allowed to open carry firearms in Maine.

If you wish you may also apply for a concealed carry permit.

in northern new england, with possible exception of walking between a bear/moose and its offspring, i really don't think you have much to worry about at all. no gator level threats. humans are by far the most dangerous animals, however everyone in maine is so nice, i don't think you have to worry

Paranoia takes a lot of enjoyment out of life. Based on your personal experience, what have you blundered upon in the Maine woods that scares you so much?

MW, I don't know about Outdoor Nut but I can answer that question for me. I started this post not because of paranoia, but because I am aware that wild animals exist in the woods.

I am aware that it is rare that people get attacked no matter what state they are in, (even alligators).

But I'm also aware that it does happen, from time to time, and I just want to know what to look for, what I am allowed to do, just in case.

Are the chances very slim? I'm pretty sure they are. Does it mean I will tip toe through the woods and whip my head around frantically with every noise I hear? No.

But again, any time you are in the woods or wilderness, regardless how slim, there is still a chance and I just want to know about these animals, what to look for, what to expect, what to do. That's all this is about, for me.

I'm not new to the woods. I've been camping in the woods several times. I have gone on hikes in the woods. I've been around alligators and snakes for the past 5 years. I go outside and enjoy the time with my dogs in the Everglades but I know that no matter how hot it may be, no matter how refreshing a dunk in the lake may feel, I don't do it because I know there are alligators in there. I also know, chances are, even if I DO take a dip in the lake I won't get chomped on, alligators or not. But I also know, there's a chance so I don't go in that area. I go in the wilderness but know where to steer clear. That's all I'm asking.

If I came across that I think I'm going to get jumped by a bobcat at every turn or pummeled by moose that are hiding behind every tree, that was not my intention.

I just don't want to be completely unprepared and completely unknowledgeable IF something were to happen. That's why I would carry a fire arm of some sort. For that millionth chance.

Naked, middle aged tourists, overwhelmed by the romantic view of a waterfall, gorge or mountain scenery.

I don't think you sound paranoid at all. Anyone who can work around gators on a regular basis can't be too worried. You have personal experience with wildlife and seem to have a lot of common sense. I think you'll be just fine here.

Quick! Mind bleach! Mind bleach! THAT is a lot scarier than the extremely slim chance of being attacked by any critter in the Maine woods.
