I'm retired and I would like to live in Maine but I need to be close to the VA for medical which is in Augusta but Augusta has a high crime rate but it is a pretty town. Burnswick is low in crime but very expensive. I might not buy a house for the first year but don't want to live in an apartment so what would be a good place to live which is less than an hour form Augusta or is Augusta just a fine town to live in?

You could look into Gardiner or Hallowell or even Waterville isn't that far from Augusta. There is also Sidney which is south of Waterville.
