Since I am more than likely to lose my house to forclsure because of our economic down turn... do all landlords do credit checks? I know my credit is horrible right now like many others in my position.

I am in Ohio right now but planning a move with my wife and little boy during the summer. I have a job lined up (not in Maine) but working for a solar power company that will be doing jobs out of state. I want to make Maine my home though.

Id move this question to the Real Estate forum and subforum renting.. You may get a better response there. I happened to find it in the "new posts"..

I do credit checks but one gal we are renting to now had bad credit and a divorce.. the whole nine yards but we rented to her. It is when you try to hide something that I would deny renting to you if the item you were attempting to hide came out. She was very upfront about her situation and we worked with her on it.

Usually you end up with higher deposits like three months worth.

I've only rented once in Maine, and yes, my landlord ran a credit check.

It doesn't necessarily mean they won't rent to you if your other references are good. But as NeilVA said, it's likely you'll end up needing a higher deposit.

Best place in Maine to look for rentals is Craigslist or the classifieds of local papers (many of which are online).

Although it might take a little longer for you to actually be accepted, my advice is to disclose ALL your information up front. Be honest and hold your head up high. Think about that: There are millions of people in this country in a situation just like yours! All of these people need a place to live, right?
I am very sorry this has happened to you. You WILL get back on your feet.
The best of luck to you and yours!
