Hello everyone,

We are going to Bar Harbor, Maine, for a week in August and would like to find a nice downtown hotel so that we can walk to the shops and restaurants. We don't want the most expensive hotel in town but we don't want the cheapest either. We would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks much.

Since price and location are both considerations, you might want to consider the Bar Harbor Villager, Aurora Inn, Cromwell Harbor, The Yankee Lady Inn or Moseley Cottage Inn and Town Motel. The Bar Harbor Inn and Spa would be my first choice both for the view and location even though the rates are higher.

Its really not necessary to stay in Bar Harbor. LL Bean runs these FREE propane busses all over the island from June 30 to September 30. All you ahve to be is in walking distance of a bus stop. This means that you can rent a house and just get a bus in and out.

Additionally, though my own house is in the town of Bar Harbor(and I pay taxes to BH), its not in the village. When we find something we want to buy in BH, we drive over to Southwest Harbor and buy it for about 25% less.

There are lots of options besides the big hotels and lots of interesting houses even in the village, that might be as much fun or more, than staying in one of the big hotels. After all, you're going to be there for a whole week.

You can direct mail me privately if you want more info. I admittedly don't know a lot about Maine as a state, but I do know a lot about my new hometown, MDI and Bar harbor.
