Hi,

My family is considering a relocation to Maine. I saw some appealing homes in Standish during an online real estate search. It appears to have a 30 mins commute to Portland where I could find work (at the Maine Medical Center).

Can anyone provide information on this community such as the quality of the school system, recreation, shopping.

I love Maine and enjoy my seasonal campground in OOB from May to October. I would move in a heartbeat, but hubby might take a little convincing. Would really have to be the right house in the right town. We currently live in Central Mass and if we sold our house we could get an equal home in this area of Maine for about $50K less. A bit of an incentive although I am sure the wages are less also.

Any input would be much appreciated!

I dont know much about Standish, but we looked at a few houses there before finding the perfect one in Minot, near Auburn. It a beautiful house on 4 acres, that we bought for about 75k less than our New Jersey house made. It's a hell of a commute to Portland though, where my hub works in a hotel, about 50 min. one way, but he is making about 40% MORE than he made in one of the A.C. casinos. I have heard from many people here that work in the medical field is easy to find, and pays competitively. One thing I would advise before you make an offer on a house is to find the sex offender registry and plan accordingly. Good luck with your move, we love it here.

I don't know much about the school system, but I have been told the taxes are fairly low.
As far as shopping and recreation, it depends which part of Standish you live in. The Windham side has the advantage to both of those. There are many shops/stores in North Windham. There are also a string of lakes with public access. If you punch in Standish to Mapquest you will see all the lakes around. If your husband likes to fish or hunt, this is an ideal area. Good luck with your search!

Standish is a very attractive semi rural town to the NW of Portland- right near Sebago Lake- shopping at the Shaws supermarket plaza- more to the east in Westbrook and Portland. Generally a peaceful and quiet area.

Thanks to all for your input. Standish sounds very similar to the town we live in now.

Standish is a nice small town with good elementary schools. I would consider private school when your children are ready to attend Jr. and Sr. High. The commute to Maine Med may be frustrating due to the congestion going through Gorham during rush hour because there are no highways to go around the town. Standish is a very quaint nice little town that is an easy commute to the mall and Portland, just not at rush hour.

Standish is a nice town, however the commute is horrible, especially on 25. The college is there and it can be a lengthy commute. I lived there for a year, and in a slighht snow storm it took me an hour and a half to get home one evening. Windham is another smaller town, and the commute isn't as bad. Good luck!

Why? Is it a matter of the quality of education, or is it more of a safety issue? Or both?

I know people from Standish who still go to Bonney Eagle High School and they love it. As of what I have heard its a nice area with good schools. The BE High School also has a good football team.
