Maine Could See More Billboards if Ban is Lifted - WABI TV5

I was just reading this too. Ridiculous! stupid, stupid, stupid.... and this: "State Rep. Dennis Keschl of Belgrade says what his proposal is trying to do is make small businesses more accessible to the traveling public". I can't think of a small business owner who would spend the money on a billboard at this point.

I think you are right. Having worked with many small businesses as a graphic designer in areas where billboards ARE common, I can say for certainty that the only client I ever had that got a billboard was a local non-profit, and the billboard space was donated by the company for a few weeks each fall to promote an event. They always had a few boards that were not sold, so they got a tax write off and a feel good moment and the Decoy Carving Guild got a couple of weeks of promo.

The are pretty pricey.

I emailed my State rep and asked him to vote no on this ridiculous bill. Maine does NOT need billboards or large signs of any kind. It this day and age of smart phones, I-pads, blackberries, and even information on GPS navigation systems, no business is unknown. Billboards are just plain nonsense! Get with the program Legislature!!!

Keeping the restrictions on bilboards seems a good idea to me, too.

And if anything, who needs to look at signs anymore with all the online advertising and product and services websites to see?

I agree. I'm beginning to believe that the human race will soon be unable to read anything but a 2 inch phone screen.

Kidding aside, I also agree that most smaller businesses wouldn't want to shell out the dough for those.

so... it must be larger businesses and franchises that are driving this bill?

Ogden Nash wrote"

"I think that I shall never see,
A billboard lovely as a tree;
Indeed unless the billboards fall,
I may never see a tree at all."

In the rush to pander to big business, I hope that we don't lose some of that which makes Maine special....and "the way life ought to be".
