We pay $189 per month for two cars. I barely ever drive mine...it's a van and my husband's Mountaineer. That's NJ and actually that's cheap for here.

In my experience other states may commonly have annual: road-taxes, license plate taxes, vehicle taxes, property taxes on the vehicle, and registration fees [to 'register' the vehicle to the plates].

Maine has a registration fee when you first register it here [a one time fee and not an annual fee]. Vehicle taxes in Maine are called 'Excise' taxes they are paid annually to the township. And a $12.50 fee once a year that you pay for the vehicle to be safety inspected.

Mainers tend to be very proud that they have the highest 'excise tax' in the nation. Though it is because nobody else uses the phrase 'excise tax' in the same manner as Mainers use it.

I seem to recall paying to re-register the vehicle every year on top of the excise tax so it isn't a one time fee for registratrion. You know ....the little stickers you have to put on your plates every year....those are not excise tax stickers. Look at your registration there is an annual fee for registration. The only one time fee is sales tax.

We pay about $83.00 a month for full coverage on a 2008 Saab, a 2006 Toyota Tundra, a 2007 Triumph Bonneville, and liability on a 1973 Yamaha 175. Sometimes there is a moped on there too and it goes up by a few dollars. We pay quarterly around $335.00 We also pick up the insurance for my son who is still in college and his runs about another $1000 per year.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive. My auto coverage keeps going up here in Florida. Full coverage for my wife's 2007 Nissan & my 1994 F-350 has jumped to $189/ month. If and when we move back to Maine, I'm sure we would save on this and especially on our homeowner's ins. ( can you say hurricanes? )

The utilities are not too bad here. Even with a/c costs, average electric bills for our 2,400 sq. ft. house are only $130/month. I do burn wood in the winter, so that saves.

My biggest concern about buying or building in Maine is the property tax situation. I know Maine is overall less than the other NE states in that regard, but my taxes here in FL are $800.00 per year. The same house in most small towns in Maine would be well over $3,000 per year. Comes down to everything being a trade off. That's what life is.

Unless you have shorefront, I'm pretty sure your tax bill will not be $3,000.- a year.

Ours is $4500 a year and we're nowhere near the water. My inlaws pay $10,000 a year for a small cottage on the water.

My 2400sq ft home on 150 acres of forest with river frontage costs me $850/year.

A house in 99% of Maine's townships that costs over $3,000/year would seriously be a massive house on the ocean.

Granted there does exist a tiny select few cities in Maine that do have high municipal services which do require higher property taxes. But that is a rare instance in Maine.
