Can anyone give us some insight on where we may enjoy a family vacation in Maine. We do enjoy sightseeing, the shore, and eating good. We really do not want to go *camping* and we do have a 19 month old, so *camping out on a schooner * is really out. My 13 year old son would probably enjoy fishing with dad while the girls are at the beach.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Pretty much anywhere between Kittery and Eastport for the coast. Just be sure to get off the turnpike and bring patience for the traffic. Get on Rt 1 north of Portland and sit back and enjoy. Get a Maine Gazetteer (maps in book form) and quit thinking about it. You're only about 6 hours from the border.

lots of people go to place like Well's Maine, just below Portland. It's on the coast with all kinds of little cottages to rent and motels. Family friendly with family things to do from miniature golfing to going to the beach to going to a water park and going to a drive-in movie theater at night. Or you and try norther coast line like, Bar Harbor in Acadia National Park, beautiful scenery, lots of shopping, but not as kid friendly, more for adult. Thats my opinion anyway. Good luck and no matter what you do in maine they say it right it is the vacation state, no matter where you go, you'll have a good time, you can't beat the beauty of this state. Start at Kittery and head up North/Up the coast. I go to Freeport, Portland, Kennnebunk, Boothbay.

If you stop in Freeport make sure you find Desert Road and head west on that. Who woulda thunk Maine had a desert?

Thanks for all the replies so far. We definately want to photograph some of hte wildlife, especially the Moose. Would we have to go way North for them?

A few years ago I saw a pair of moose not far from the first toll on the turnpike. However, it's the only time in 50 years that I've seen them there...in fact, it's only been in the last 5 years that I've seen any at all, they can be somewhat elusive. Your chances of seeing them are much better to the north and/or west.

Most of the ones I've seen (or seen sign of) have been in the Caribou/Connor/Madawaska/Van Buren area, or near Perry...and one looking in my kitchen window one morning.

We try to head to the Rangeley area each fall (missed it last year), and have always seen moose there. On the road between Rangeley and Eustis there is a gravel pit area, and moose can be seen there almost every night. The Eustis locals can tell you exactly where to park to enjoy the view. That area of Maine is absolutely gorgeous, and well worth the trip regardless of the moose. There are beautiful lakes in the area, but of course, no ocean.
