Of course if there wasn't such Frankophile prejudice it would be pronounced Cow-lay. Before moving to the downeast Dellsworth area I wasn't aware of this prejudice---or why there are Acadians in New Orleans.

The easiest way to avoid mispronunciation is by watching the local news or listening to local radio. They are required to research proper pronunciations. I've learned how to pronounce many names down here through those things.

How about Segeunkedunk?

Unless they're from outah state, why would they need to research proper pronunciations of places in Maine.

That's so funny! Around here in Charlotte we get a good laugh at the news people because they are always getting pronounciations wrong we try to guess where their from by how they say "Concord" or "Lancaster".....

I would never have guessed Lubec had a "loo" sound in it..................

When I visited New Orleans, all the locals pronouced it Nor'lins. But the local TV announcers all pronounced it "NEW Or-Leens."

Go Figure!

I think it's because half your population are transplanted New Yorkers

I know of at least a dozen people from my small hometown who have transplanted to Charlotte. We have a long-joke up here (and my NC friend as well) that Charlotte is being overrun with New Yorkers and you can have a NY class reunion in NC.

I heard something this past week on the Dennis Miller Radio Show. Someone called in from NC and told him about "halfbacks". Dennis questioned him about it and the caller said that many New Yorkers will try to retire in Florida but find it's just too hot so they end up going half way back to New York and end up in NC. Halfbacks.

Yeah. New Yorkers are really single-minded (in more ways than one). It's about all hot weather. Then they get the hot weather and the move back up north because they can't handle it. Then again, Florida is a mess all it's own. A mixture of illegals, cocaine, retirees, and whole towns of foreclosed houses.

NC just doesn't interest me. The only places that would are the areas near the Outer Banks. But they've been heavily marketed.
