Not an issue unless you're parked somewhere that has a swarm of black flies around. And they don't come out on hot muggy days anyway. If you're driving, they don't swarm over open roads. And I drive faster than they can fly anyway!

We have definitely needed a/c to sleep easily the past few nights here... the humidity is horrible at night and the house fan doesn't seem to do much unless it's cool outside. The whole house fan really works well, although not as much now in the summer. Had never seen this until I moved here... in the spring and fall to cools off the house nicely.

If you have a finished basement or a very open house probably no need for a/c, but if its multistory or not very open you're gonna want ac for a few weeks/months out of the year.

I won't even look at houses for sale up here that don't have central a/c (or are a good enough purchase price that it makes sense to retrofit). This is our third summer here and I think it's hotter than Hades in many houses and buildings (including the one we lease) since so many don't have central air.

Different (fan) strokes for different folks.....

If you don't mind me asking, why would you do this? It doesn't cost you more to turn on the air conditioning in your car. It can be very mild temps outside, but when your car sits in the sun for any length of time, it can heat up to 20-30 degrees hotter than outside temps--like an oven.

I lived for many years in San Francisco, and never had an air conditioner there, but appreciated the one in my car for the times we needed it. I also remember the days (young and broke) of driving our old car that didn't have a working a/c, and that gave me the ultimate appreciation for it when we finally got a car that had it.

I just can't think of a single reason to unhook a car a/c. Even if you rarely used it, wouldn't you want it for the times that you really need it? What if you leave the area you live in and drive some place warmer?

Sorry for all the questions, but you really have me wondering.

Lisaincali, of course you didn't need a/c in San Fran....it hardly ever gets above 80 degrees in the summer. I lived half way between there and Sac and kept a boat in Emeryvilly to go to on weekends to cool off! I worked one year in Benicia and commuting for hot to cool and then back to hot.....I never had so many colds as that year! But I do agree about unhooking a car a/c....why bother?

So is it safe to have the windows open in your home during the day/ overnight?

Here in FL, there is NO way you should sleep with open windows at night, even if you could. Not safe at all, but I guess if the bedrooms are all on the 2nd floor it might be ok without any means of access.

Safe?

We have screens on our windows to keep the bugs out. Totally safe.

Ok, that's it... we're moving to Maine!

Seriously, things are bad down here. We had 2 home invasions in my little neighborhood a few weeks after we moved in. A gang member from Orlando broke down the front door at 1PM. A few houses over and that would have been me sitting here with my kids. I could go on and on...

Hence, I am trolling the Maine board. We're definately moving north at some point in the next 3 years max. (maybe next summer!)

I cannot imagine life without A/C. Lately, it's been 80 in my house with the A/C cranking all day. It just can't keep up with 100 degree heat index weather.
