[quote=square peg;20177088]Y'know, you've jinxed yourself now. All the wasps and yellow jackets that read this forum will be up for a visit next year.

By the way, while back down here in MA, I got stung yesterday by a yellow jacket after getting to close to a nest by an area pond.

Then there was a nest at work I blasted away...

There is NO shortage of yellow jackets in MA this year, that's for sure.

Okay, it's 4 years later and I have yet to see any wasps around, meaning the long -egged social critters, either the brown ones (northern paper wasp) or the yellow/black newcomers (European paper wasp), both polistes genus. In the past 4 years I have cleaned out the beginnings of 2 small aerial yellow jacket nests and perhaps spotted one of their bald faced hornet cousins (genus dolichovespula, D. arenaria and macalata, respectfully), so at least a few of those two can hack it here. (Dolichovespula makes the enclosed, hanging nests versus open, in-ground nests which are the work of the common yellow jackets or the open hanging nests on buildings, which are the nests of paper wasps. )

I wouldn't have thought the slightly shorter summer season would have made much of a difference between The County and MA, but with 4 more years of observation now, I think it's safe to say that there really are far fewer wasps and yellow jackets here.

Actually, I did see some kind of mud dauber wasp yesterday, come to think of it.

Mainly, it's been bumble bees, bumble bees, and more bumble bees.
