I'd love to find someone through referral....Spending that kind of $$$$ I'd want to make sure they are great.

Moxie, I will message you the info about a mason my husband used to work for. He did meticulous, well built work. but i don't think he will come cheaply and I'm not sure how far he will travel from the Berwicks. It sounds like you need a lot of work done. Don't poopoo the high end pricing because good quality masonry takes a lot of prep, good materials, and studious hand work if you want a structure that will last the long haul and the extreme hot/cold conditions.

Hubby also recommends that you speak to your local fire marshal for a referral. They are usually familiar with the work of area masons from chimney fire repairs and preventative work.

Default Thanks!

It's not so much price (although there is only so much we can afford) as getting the best work and not being overcharged. We've had such widely ranging opinions and prices! Some people charge a lot because they are worth it and some because they are snakes. I'm continually amazed at folks who can live with themselves trying to rip off the elderly. We tell my dad not to do anything over $50 with out checking with us first!

you can try Paul Hausman in Albany Twp, ME. He hasn't done fireplace work for me, but I've seen 2 stone fireplaces he built that were works of art.

Just met with Richard Pellitier of mainechimneyrepair.com. We have some decisions to make because we aren't sure if we are going to raise the cottage or not eventually. The good news is that we do not need to take the fireplace and chimney down unless we raise the cottage. He said the main damage is from water because we do not have a cap. Even told us if we want to do nothing we can get a piece of stone from down the road and put it over the top to prevent damage. Great honest guy from what I can tell.
