This company "Worcester Wreath" I believe it is called has been doing this for many years now with the help of many volunteers. I think this is the largest number of wreaths that has ever been sent, to be laid on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery.

My daughter is excited to be volunteering to place the wreaths at Arlington this year with a group from her work. A good friend whose dad was an Air Force pilot who died in a plane crash in the 50s and is buried at Arlington also volunteers. It's very meaningful to her and her family and a great sight to see.

This is the 20th year. In 1992 I got an E-mail from a friend in Virginia who saw wreaths widely scattered at Arlington. He asked where they came from and was told that those are Maine graves and Maine people had made the wreaths and placed them on the graves. He sent me two photos. I was blown away by it and the next year people came and worked all night to decorate the wreaths. The next morning I brought the donuts to the Worcester plant at Topsfield and thanked them all from a Vietnam veteran.

It has grown over the years. This year the Wreaths Across America Foundation will place wreaths on all the graves at Arlington.

There is one more wreath, A few years ago I found a grave in the woods. It was covered with branches and pine needles. I tossed the branches aside, brushed the leaves and needles off the top and stepped around the stone. I got chills. It said;

Benjamin Bowers
Private
7 Mass Regt.
Rev War

I looked him up. He did serve in the 7th Mass Regiment and received a land grant in "The Maine" for his service. Ben and his wife, Sabrina, hiked up the Penobscot and headed east up the Passadumkeag River until they found a south facing slope with good soils and not too many rocks. They built a farm. Ben died in 1834. Sabrina Died in 1835. The landowner did not know the graves were there. Next week I will go in and place a wreath on Ben's grave. I placed one last year too.

I remember this cool story and your picture from last year. I copied it to show an old time Mainer what you had done. And to show him the quality of friends I keep. Here's the one you posted here last year. I would like to see this years too if you can. I love to go to old cemetaries and or find old graves in the woods like you did.

I'll take a photo. I was hoping for snow by next week. I'll watch the forecast, but the wreath goes out there, snow or not. Thanks for posting the pic.

and thanks for laying the wreath.

RMoore-glad I'm not the only one fascinated by old cemeteries. Most of my friends think I'm nuts (they could be right) so when I go, I go alone. Kinda prefer it that way anyway.

When we hike the trail at the Blagden Preserve near Pretty Marsh which is on the way to Southwest Harbor, we always come back by the road instead of the woods so we can go into the woods just a short distance off the road and visit the graves there from the 1800's.
