I lived in Waterville/Winslow most of my life. It's a nice area. Good schools. Realistic real estate prices. The best thing, however, is that it is a very easy drive to either ocean, lakes or mountains. Very central to anything you could want to do. Also a very easy drive to Bangor or Portland for "big" shopping.

It's a lovely area. I love the little town of Gardiner. It seems to be basically a bedroom community for Augusta, but it is a lovely little community.

Hallowell is basically a suburb of Augusta, but it is a nice place with its own little downtown area skirting the river.

Augusta... hit and miss. Some very nice neighborhoods certainly. But some less than nice neighborhoods too. And some that are downright nasty.

Many of the other "towns" are little more than a few buildings congregating around a slow spot in the road. But it is really beautiful country. A nice combination of rolling farmland, woods, hills, and rivers. Some very nice lakes, too.

I also live in Kennebec County, a recent transplant...and I absolutely love it. I live in the lakes region, in a beautiful, rural, lakefront area ...yet only minutes from Augusta, Waterville, and many other (smaller and more quaint) areas that carry their own little charm. Although I do most business and shopping in Waterville or Augusta, I prefer the rural areas to live and enjoy true Maine.

As BacktoNE stated, it's awesome to be so centrally located. Mountain biking/hiking, ocean swimming, arts and cultural programs and theatre abound all within a short drive away.
I researched Maine for quite some time before moving.... and chose the right place!
