Maine had three fatal snowmobile accidents so far this weekend. There is still one night ahead of us. There were three additional snowmobile riders injured. I know our snow is late this year and the season is shortened, but be careful out there. Snowmobiling is as safe or as dangerous as you make it.

You'll see this on TV and in the paper over the next few days, but for some of us it's personal. One of those who died was a friend of mine.

Was there any one factor that links these fatalities? Ice, etc?

One went through the ice on a lake. One went off the lake into the woods at night at high speed. One went off a trail at high speed. The head on collision occurred in the middle of a trail at the crest of a hill. One guy rolled his sled in is own yard.

All were preventable.

Does anyone know where I can get a map of Maine with snowmobile trails and ATV trails on it? Maybe someplace in Augusta...seems it would be a handy thing to have!

I have some. PM me and I'll mail you one. Most snowmobile dealers have them. Some town offices have them.

Thanks NMLM! I called a dealer next town over, and they have them! Great idea!

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Sadly these things happen every year. There may be instances of a freak accident happening but most should not happen. They cause much pain and sorrow to the friends and families of the victims.

Graham Lake, my home, was where the rider went through the ice. It's haunting me. So, so sad.
