Rural. Machias is the county seat and it is a fine town, with a branch of the University of Maine. Cutler is charming but pricey, and beyond that is Trescott which is an unincorporated town that is large with small population. Lots of land but it is wild and undeveloped. Lubec is charming, but very, very quiet, and then there is the unused seaport of Eastport the furthest most point in the US. We love it up there, and have found people to be very friendly and open if you are. VERY quiet with little in the way of economy, so if you are thinking of moving way downeast, located into a little town, and finding that perfect job that pays good wages and benefits you will most probably NOT find it in Washington County.

You may want to consider Eastport. It is beautiful and probably the last area were the taxes are very very low and real estate for the coast is extremely reasonable. There are not very many areas where you can live on the ocean for under $200,000.00.
Machias was mentioned, but the winters are colder than Eastport, but most importantly the waterfront in Eastport is breathtaking. The July 4th events are a must see with military ships docking in Eastport for viewing.
You can walk downtown Water St. with no problems -- no crime and no traffic. Everything in downtown is within walking distance, including the local elementary school and high school.
Something to really consider.

It seems the remainder of my message was cut-off.
In September Eastport has the Salmon festival, which is quite fun. We were in Eastport on Labor Day -- boating on the waters, watching the whales and seals in the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy separates Canada and the U.S., and one can see Campobella Island, Canada from Eastport. You can either take the car ferry or boat across to Campobella (just 10-15 mins. ride). Campobella is a must see -- where President Roosevelt's historic vacation home sits on the waterfront. It has been kept in its original state and is open to the public for viewing.
We took lots of photos of the area and would be more than happy to share them with you.
