Hello everyone. My family is moving to Brunswick Maine in February. My husband is in the Navy and will be stationed at NAS Brunswick. Naval Air Station Brunswick is closing in 2011. We will live in Maine for three years and would really like to buy a house in the Brunswick area, but I worry about selling it arond 2010, do you think with the base closing it wuold be hard to re-sell? What will happen to the town of Brunswick when the base is closed? It will obviosly take a hit, but will it come back? Will people still move there? Also, the homes are beautiful but old....would you buy an older home? I love the detail and charachter but fear the house falling apart...maybe we should just live in base

Unlike many other navy towns the closing of the base will not do alot of harm

I lived in an old house (built around 1880-1900) for a few years. It has its good points and bad points. "Fearing things fall apart" is justified, IMO. If you and your DH are handy, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Get a really good home inspection, and just be prepared for things to come up... there's a certain sense of satisfaction fixing up an old house you just can't get in a new house.

Brunswick is a town that is not supported that much economically by the military presence. Bowdoin college is the primary engine of the town. As is some tourism- especially to Bath just to the east.

Part of your decision will be based on your husband's grade. If he is an E7 or below, then live on base if you can. If he is an 03 or above, you should be able to find that perfect old house to live in a love.

Thank you all for your responses. I think we have decided to live in base housing, all utilities are included and the houses look really nice as they have just been renovated in te last few years (yes..I know how dumb that the gov't spent millions of dollars to update all the housing and now the base is closing down).
