I went to W. Gouldsboro in '83 to visit my brother and he took me down to the lobster pound to buy some succulant crustations. I loaded them up in a cooler and after cutting down my brother's favorite evergreen from his land I drove back to "the big city" with lobster on ice and the tree tied to the top of my Ford Escort. The tree looked great in my appartment adorned with seashell decorations and little red bows. The only problem was that none of my freinds understood the joy of the lobster. I had no room in the fridge and since they need to be either frozen or cooked before they go bad I kept them packed in ice on the balcony and ate two a day until they were gone. Now, I eat two a year, that's it. I guess I overdid it.

How terrific I found this forum. I have been doing much soul searching and thinking about Maine, specifically Bar Harbor. I am not worried about finding employment, I work for myself at home. I moved twice to places I had visited and both were a disaster with a capital "D". One was to NH.. ) I am in SC now, at the beach, and some wonder why I'd leave it for Maine. The best answer is that tourism has ruined this county in the last 5 years. Yes, I know, BH is a big tourist area, but the type of people that have found us here make living here in summer misery. At least in BH, I can hide in the park. My thought was within the next year or so, after summer rentals are done, would be to find a short term rental, like Oct-May and go from there.. I will have spent a winter (I'm originally from CT), and see how I feel. I know as a New Englander, we can be a little "distant" with strangers, tho it is much different here and I like the outgoing friendliness here, so I can take that with me as part of me.. ) thoughts anyone?

You should visit the realtors who operate rental businesses. They all have websites and someone on "the island" should have a winter rental that you could investigate. If you haven't been to the area since 1983 though, you may find that it has changed dramatically.

And btw, well said. I've also tried to emphasize these points about Maine several times (not very elegantly I might add). There aren't many places like it, it's beautiful and peaceful, while at the time, unlike any other place I've ever lived in (too many stories - I could/should write a book).

The main issue for anyone moving to Maine is *employment* though. This can't be emphasized enough. Of the five or six families I've known who have moved to Maine within the past 10 years, all have left, mainly due to difficulty in retaining a decent income. I also think a big part of it was also maybe a comfortable (more convenient) lifestyle they might have had before they moved to Maine.

I've also noticed that Maine has changed quite a bit over the last 10-15 years, and not for the better... The two things I find disturbing about Maine since I've moved away are:

1: Increased poverty throughout the state coupled with a lack of job creation and increased taxes every year.

2: The number of methaone clinics that have opened up (one next to one of my uncle's home in Westbrook - just one of several that have opened up in the area in the past few years).

I've considered moving my own family to Maine several times, but these two aspects of it are simply too real to ignore.

I'll still return to Maine with my family every possible summer that I can but as for living there, that's something that needs to be considered very carefully and financially, well planned out in advance. A warning to all who are about to take the plunge.
Now Chris you can say all the nice thing's about Maine but don't point out the real thing's about Maine like no job's and drug problem's or nobody's going to converse with you! Shall we talk about crooked judges, lawyers, DA's and police. Shall we talk about where the drug's start from? Should we talk about how many people are either on welfare or disability(some disability needed most not) Shoul we talk about the few that run these town's. Yes Maine is beautiful, the scenery that is, but scenery will not pay the bill's and I for one do not like my desisions being made by a very few crooked people with there own agenda's which is putting money in there own pocket's!Well I guess it's time for me to go take my medication!!!

I do hope you were not educated in Maine, considering your poor spelling and grammar! And I agree - take your meds!!

You are proving my point Elcarim. I am not telling you to not share your good thought's on Maine but please do not paint this state as a dreamland because it isn't.The beauty of the land is not deniable but the corruption in this state is not deniable either! Be truthful please one of these people who believe this line your giving them may be your nieghbor someday and then ask you why you didn't tell them the TRUTH.

I don't believe anyone has painted this state as a "dreamland", but some of us frankly don't have the issues with this state that you do Let's....seriously, you just continue to rant and not back anything up with facts. It's very tiring.

Furthermore, I think Elcarim is using the exact same watercolors that I am, and I see no problem with her painting. You have no right to tell her how to use them.
