Maybe….

Or maybe they will "drive" around looking at only the homes that were built by the people that can afford to build something with such attention to detail and character in today’s market.

Like the builder before him (Charles W. Elliot), this new owner is doing nothing more than what Mr. Elliot did. That is to take advantage of his status in this world and to have what he/she wants.

I can hardly guess to what the real historical value is for saving a home like that, but I would gather that whatever is built there, it will have just as much character and detail as was the original and who knows………maybe 150 years from know some people will be upset because someone with a lot of money is tearing down yet another historical piece of real estate to build another. The more things change..........the more they stay the same.
I believe your right , in this regard, however the reason it becomes a problem nowadays is the sheer amount of people with money to do this type of thing. I could be wrong , I'm no history expert, but I think so many more people have money. People a long time ago, didn't have that kind of money. The rich were few and far between. Now with the loans being given out and real estate being so (relatively) easy to obtain the nation is being gobbled up. Also , hasn't the population grown tremendously from 100 yrs ago? Again this is just my opinion and I could be way off , here. I am alway open to learn new things. Actually that's one of the reasons I love this forum..we all can have some differing opinions and toss them around!

Thank you all for explaining.. I still need a ~little~ more clarification. So let's say I am buying 30 acres in Maine...am I supposed to be expecting bullets flying in the middle of the woods..do I need to tell my kids to wear bright orange vests when playing in them..LOL! No really ..I am just trying to picture this...
Also , can someone define treehugger and why they get such a bad rap? One more thing that has been driving me crazy is what is a "DH"? I know it's for husband but what's the "D"?

That's a good point. One piece of property I looked at, some people were tearing it up with ATVs and leaving trash around. My plans for the property didn't include motorized vehicles racing around it. But, I didn't buy that piece so I didn't have to make the decision of whether or not to p*** anyone off by closing it off to ATVs.

The property I am buying now is going to have a shooting range. I can't have people wandering around in the area where I will be shooting so it will have to be posted.

I think, when most people refer to "treehuggers", they mean the ultra-conservationists who don't want anybody to do anything that might disturb the land. That's what I think of anyway. I was reading something a while ago, about a company that wanted to build some stuff in an area out west that really didn't have much in the way of wildlife...except for some peculiar species of fly. They made a tremendous stink because of it.

There was an incident a couple years back where a young girl was mistakenly shot by a hunter in the field behind her house. During hunting season it is always smart (and I believe the law) to wear hunter orange while in the woods.
I believe most people are afraid of change. If you want to build a garage between you and your neighbors house you may upset the neighbors simply because you've impeded their view. But you OWN the land and it is your right.
I sold a potato field to a couple and they built a house on it. "Well, they have ruined that field!" "Doesn't that look ugly,a house in the middle of that field!"
There were many locals that didn't want to see change. But heck the couple bought it,built there dream home and are happy as clams.
Guess what it boils down to is if you can afford it-you can do whatever you want to with it.
We still have thousands of acres in Maine-wild and free and I wouldn't live anywhere else!

An orange vest or hat is almost a requirment, depending on where you are walking. Good idea.

"Treehuger"...More likley than not, a hyphenated last name, granola chrunchin', Volvo driving, busybody, often, but not always, living off a trust fund.

The female of the species often wears winter clothes in the summer and a large hat. The males are often seen wearing $200 sunglasses, a ponytail down to the waist, sporting LL Bean shorts and wearing some sort of weird looking bush hat and looks like he crawled out of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa from a Meerkat expedition.

Their identity can be further confirmed by the fact they have yet to remove the Kerry-Edwards sticker from their bumper, and probably have the hate Bush or Greenpeace thing on there also. The presence of a Thule rack or Kevlar kayaks on the roof of the Volvo or Forester, in conjunction with the above objective observations are often enough for preliminary confirmation.

In order to be sure, you have to gather some subjective evidence. To do this, you have to stalk up and strike up a conversation with them. If they refer to a jungle as a 'rain forest,' Maine as a 'wilderness,' 'old growth, 'primeval,' or IN ANY WAY talk about Lynx or Wolf habitat, your suspicions are confirmed!

You can check the Fish and Game website for open seasons.

Sorry if lumped anyone into the objective category who might just be comfortable wearing or driving that stuff. I'm on the verge of ranting. I have a business and deal with these people all the time.

Oh well, a friend dropped off a moose heat and some tenderloin today! It should just about be ready to take out of the oven. You haven't lived until you've had braised stuffed moose heart and french fries! Yummmm!

Well, my sunglasses cost a bit more, but my bumper sticker says "Ted Kennedy has killed more people with his car than I with my "assault" rifle."

I carry five orange vests in my truck during October and November. It is the responsible thing to do.

I was sitting on a ridge a few years ago and saw something brown moving fast through the woods. It was a guy on a mountain bike and wearing a brown sweater. That is foolhardy to do in November. Some hunters have no experience in the woods. A lady was killed several years ago near Bangor. A hunter saw some deer and didn't have a clear shot. Then he saw brown and white. He fired and killed a homeowner. The lady was wearing brown and had on white mittens. There were deer tracks on the scene, but the hunter was terribly wrong.

Wear a flourescent vest if you go into the woods during deer season. It isn't stupid.
