They got the Leapfrog Award for providing excellent care and improving patient results. The hospital administrator went to Maryland to accept the award as a "Top Rural Hospital".

CALAIS, Maine — Calais Regional Hospital is among the 2012 recipients of a “Top Rural Hospital” award from The Leapfrog Group.

Founded 12 years ago, The Leapfrog Group is a private-sector initiative launched to improve the quality of care in hospitals nationwide. The organization was created by large employers concerned that employees receiving health care benefits were not being adequately served. It is a voluntary program designed to put the health care system on notice that “big leaps” in health care safety, quality and value will be recognized and rewarded.

People complain, as they usually do, about it but I always found them to be very good. We've used the ER twice and DW had surgery there. All went fantastically. Not even one problem with billing.

They've been very good to me in the ER, lab, radiology and OR. EMMC could take lessons from CRH.

I know right?

Congratulations to them!

I know the clinical director of the ER down there is top notch. I have heard good things about that place (and believe me, I hear the good, the bad, and the downright ugly about most health care facilities a lot).

I just wonder how long they can stay open, if the population of Calais continues to drop. If they get down below 3,000 (which they are almost at now), then there is no way they can retain the same level of services. The closing of the nursing home in Calais just verifies that.
Machias' hospital has gotten some terrible publicity lately, and Machias is no bigger than Calais. So maybe they chould combine and build a bigger hospital in the Cobscook area which could offer better care and more services??
