I've read that if you are on the coast of Maine the weather is ten degrees cooler in the summer and ten degrees warmer in the winter. How far inland can you be and still get the moderating effect of the ocean?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I think I read somewhere its within 30 min of the coast. I'm not sure though I'd be interested in knowing (more to avoid the extreme cold in winter).

The Maine coast will be 6-8 degrees cooler in the summer. If its 87 in Augusta, it will be around 80 in or less in Acadia National Park. They same holds true for most of the coastline to about 15 miles away from the ocean an many bays.

In the winter the oceans moderating influence extends to about 15-20 miles.

We live in Calais, along the St. Croix river....when we head down to Eastport, south on Rt. 1 through Robbinston we really start to feel the difference....looking at the temp in the Jeep it can drop as much as 12 degrees between where we live in the center of Calais and Robbinston--as we get closer to Eastport the temp continues to drop....we've seen differences as great as 20 degrees in the summer, and of course when you factor in the lack of humidity, it makes all the difference! There have been evenings in the summer where it was too hot to sleep in Calais, and we've headed to our house in Eastport--28 miles from house to house. It's not always a 20 degree difference though....on average for us it's about 12....in the winter the difference is about that much too, 12 or so.

I've noticed the humidity rise with the heat by the time we've crossed the causeway into Perry. By the time we get to Calais, it really is 10 - 12 degrees hotter and way more humid. I've watched the temp thingy on the car and as soon as we hit 190, the temps start dropping dramatically so by the time we get to the house in Eastport, the difference in that 7 mile stretch between 190 in Perry and Boynton St in Eastport is substantial.

David, that is cool! Is that at the top of the mountain you take the train up to for sightseeing?

Yes, indeedy. I've never gone to the summit, but I've been in the area and it's quite nice.
