The most important word so far in this thread is "layers". You can put a quiolted snow suit on and it will work when conditions are right, but a set of fleece underwear or even flannel pajamas next to the skin will keep your tots comfortable. Don't be bashful about buying from thrift stores. Kids grow like weeds and their winter clothing will be significantly more expensive than your clothing budget in Texas.
Just out of curiosity, what mad you choose Island Falls?
NMLM--I was wonderin' 'bout that myself. I decided they must have relatives there or they're extremely adventurous. On the other hand, if they have relatives in Island Falls, why would they be asking us on CD for clothing advice. You're right about the importance of layers. Also, some of the online stores I posted links for are in "winter clearance" (lower prices) mode and the actual stores are already putting out swim suits and tank tops. When shopping thrift stores, remember Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More Online Shopping | eBay which could very well be the largest thrift store in the world.
I like (for myself and kids) SmartWool socks. They're comfortable and warm.
If you're going to be outdoors a lot in winter, invest in warm gear for yourself. Being cold can ruin a great day out. I like UnderArmor, Duofold and Koppen.
Yep, SmartWool socks, double-layer union suits and fleece-lined jeans from LL Bean make a big difference for me...and a stupid-looking fur-lined hat with ear flaps and a chin strap (doesn't matter how it looks when it's 10 below if it keeps your ears from freezing solid).
Sportsman's Guide is having a sale on winter wear for kids right now. Super good deals. Here are the poly fleece they need. I don't know how to make a tinyURL for this site. Cut and paste. It will work.
We like small towns, the community seems pretty darn friendly, we thought why not Island Falls. Majority of my family is in NH. were a family that loves the outdoors. fishing hunting hiking gardening. so a small town like that sounds great
Also can I ask what about boots? I understand think layers and something that's water resistant.

I'm sure the next curious question is what about jobs? Boots? warm and waterproof
