Hi all-I've been lurking a while looking for information on both of these areas. We're looking for a place to buy some land for the purposes of building a simple cabin that we will use on and off during all four seasons. Here is what we are looking for:
  • Snow - I figure both areas have this covered nicely
  • 10-15 acres - Enough to have our own piece of land, have some space/privacy, and be set back from the road a ways. Also, it would be nice to have enough space to build another small cabin or two on once our family grows, our kids have kids, etc...
  • ATV/Snowmobile trails - We'd like to be close to the public trail network if not on it.
Access to a lake/pond - Lakefront would be great, but we know that's pricey. I understand that there are various kinds of arrangements with regard to access when you don't own frontage on a lake, so I need to learn more about that.
  • Power - I could do just fine with a generator system, but my wife and little ones cannot. She is a teacher so she will be with them up at the cabin for about 7-8 weeks straight by herself. I can only take my vacation in one week blocks, so I would alternate between being at the cabin and going back home to work. I don't want to leave her with a generator during that time, so we would need access to power at the road.
  • Four season access - The cabin will be used for Fall/Winter hunting, and Spring/Summer recreation, so being on a road that is accessible year round will be important. We have vehicles that can handle deep snow/mud within reason and are experienced off roaders, but don't want to risk getting stuck just getting to the cabin.
  • Proximity to medical care - We work hard and play hard, so I'd like to know that God forbid if I were to fall off a ladder maintaining my roof, or rolled my ATV that there would be a reasonably equipped hospital within an hour's drive or so.

Based on these criteria, would you folks recommend concentrating our search in one area vs. another, or would they basically offer the same things? Just from browsing on Google Maps its easy to see that Millinocket is a much larger town than Jackman. The area around Jackman is also more mountainous, which we prefer. They both are surrounded by lots of lakes and ponds which is also what we're looking for. Any guidance you all can give me would be much appreciated!

I've spent time in both places, Jackman is okay but there is no place in Maine quite like the Millinocket?East Millinocket area. Milliinocket reminds me of the town from that old TV show, "Northern Exposure". It's a heckuvalot easier getting to Millinocket than Jackman, but paradoxically, once you get to Millinocket you are at the "end of the road", so to speak. It is its own destination, and I always liked that sense. Jackman gets a lot of through traffic with trucks and traffic just going up to Quebec. Not sure if that matters to you.

I'm not sure what told you there are more mountains around Jackman; Millinocket has the majestic Katahdin just outside of town. Katahdin is the most awesome place in Maine. Plus there are a lot of other mountains nearby.

Millinocket has a hospital; not sure about Jackman.

I'd go with Millinocket.

I get what you're saying. Do you have a sense of the ATV trails around Millinocket? I was under the impression that because it was on the edge of the North Woods/Baxter that there weren't many. Is there a good map of the network online anywhere?

I guess maybe the area around Jackman looks a little more "rugged," ( Jackman, ME to Millinocket, ME - Google Maps ) but it would be nice to be close to Katahdin.

They have done major upgrades to the ATV trails in the Millinocket area in the last two years. They are probably one of the best places in Maine now.

I had to get out of there in a hurry as I was just sitting on the side of the road on this \/... and the moose looked at me a couple times and I thought it winked at me so I boogied out of there fast.

As far as Millinocket, I have some pics around there too. Both places are kind of in my back yaad.

You're right. The police car is coming north into town. I usually come by way of Rockwood and go south from Jackman to 16, the Abbot Rd., and make a big circle before going back down to Dover.

Here are a few in and around Millinocket.
