Hello,

We just found out that my husband may (probably) will be getting transferred to Presque Isle Maine. We are seeking a rental home/apartment. A quick search of the internet and a couple of calls to local realtors yeilded no results.
We are looking for a 2 bedroom, clean, quiet, within a reasonable drive (30 mins or so) to the Presque Isle airport. We have a quiet well behaved 35 lb dog. We would like to stay around or below the $1000 a month rental rate. If anyone can help with info or point us in the right direction we would appreciate it. Thanks!

You can get a house for less than that. You might try contacting the local paper (The Star Herald) and subscribing. I don't believe they have an online version.

I'm not familiar with the paper Bydand but found this link.

You definitely can rent a good house for less than that in this area (I live in Caribou). The newspaper is the place to start, but a lot of people post notices around town (doesn't help you, I guess).

Call a PI area broker. If your transfer is long term, you may want to buy some day, and a broker would be glad to establish a relationship by giving you some leads on what should be some NICE house rentals. You should be just about able to write your own ticket. I rented my house outside Bangor, 3 bedrooms, all remodeled, on 50 acres (the tenants have a bird dog, and the partridge hunting is good) for $1100/mo. You should be able to do at least that well or better in PI.

I rented a place between Presque Isle and Caribou on the Parkhurst Siding road that was a 2 bedroom house on 90 acres with 1/2 mile of frontage on the Aroostook river for $550 a month for several years before I bought a place in Washburn. That house I used to own in Washburn (moved out to Michigan now), the new owners rent it out for $575 a month - 3 bed/2bath hardwood floors on a decent sized lot (about .4 of an acre) on a quiet side street with GREAT neighbors. You can find some great deals on houses and rentals in that area, but most are not advertised is the major problem.

WOW! I can't believe the prices on rentals in the area. In the last 2 years we have lived in Northern New York, South Florida and Connecticut. While each had their ups and downs, they were all WAY more expensive. I love the idea of having some outdoor space even if it is a rental. It sure makes the idea of buying in the area much more appealing. Just not ready to commit to that at the moment due to the numerous moves we have had to make recently due to getting transferred around for work.

Hence, call a broker and tell them you MAY be looking some time down the road to buy. I'd go with a bigger office just to get the word out about rental. I'd guess vacancies are pretty high. If I were moving to PI, I'm fairly confident I could find exactly what I wanted for a VERY reasonable monthly rent.
