The military has decided that my last duty station will be in Kittery Maine. I was stationed in Bath for about 7 months a few years back so I know it is cold in the winter and such. The family and I are winter sports enthusiasts.... that doesnt help much as we are currently in Honolulu. Cant wait to get back to a place with seasons, we have 75 and sunny all year out here. Anyway, just thought I would introduce and let you know I am going to be joining your great state. Unfortunately I have no 4WD vehicle so gonna need to fix that when I get there.

Any input on best ski resorts for season passes in southern Maine would be great, I know MT Abram is about 2 hours from Kittery without any weather for the drive, with weather I can only imagine.

Thanks all.

Gib

That should be fun

My 'twilight tour' was Naples, which was also a lot of fun for the family.

You should fit right in

I surfaced a few times in Pearl Harbor, nice place to visit. But I never had any desire to live there. I took my Dw and kids out to Waikiki for Christmas and New Years a couple years ago, warm and balmy. It was nice to get back to winter though.

If you want to.

I know a few people who enjoy mudding. It requires a mechanic with deep pockets, to keep replacing all the stuff you break. No different here from anywhere else. I have known off-roaders all my life. I don't think it is any different here. Do not destroy crops, and always get land-owner permission before you rut a trail.

Welcome to Maine, and congratulations

You don't have to get a 4wd vehicle, a good set of studded or regular snow tires will do, that is unless you want the $WD for other reasons. They are really good about plowing and snow removal here. I'm not a skier...hopefully will answer you, but my family is and N Conway NH is possibly a good bet for you, 2ish hours. ad a wide array of ski resorts once there, such as attitash. I recently made the trip from portland to N conway in the snow and it was pretty easy going ad I made really good time. A lot of times it not snowing at the coast...but plenty of snow up on the mountain.

Good luck on you rmove and welcome!

I don't own an automobile. We have a 4WD truck and a 4WD van. We can't afford the extra cost for a car because by the time you buy, insure, maintain and fuel it you will not save money. That said, if you do need a car I recommend a Subaru Forester. They have more ground clearance than some pickups and are very reliable. All Subarus are AWD.

I think you are making way too much of winter in Southern Maine. We have had a 4 wheel drive vehicle only once in decades of living 3 hours north of Kittery and had no problems in the years without 4 WD. There is winter but it is not as bad as you seem to imagine it. Kittery is a great place with it's proximity to both Portland and Boston. The mountains of NH are not that far a drive for skiing. My daughter lives in Dover NH and they go to Conway, NH frequently for a choice of 4 or 5 mountains. There is also skiing about an hours drive as well. IMO your closest good skiing will be in NH not Maine.

Well my 2WDs are all performance vehicles that dont really do well in snow.... have taken them to the mountains in California in snow before but never on a daily basis. Are chains required in Maine? I have read NH for skiing more than ME. I grew up in the Mid Atlantic/Northeast area and learned to drive there in snow, that doesnt bother me. Thanks for the inputs on all. I have been thinking about getting an outback or forrester used when we get there.

You don't need chains or all wheel drive in Maine.

When I was a child (don't ask how long ago, please), my dad would get out the chains on rare occasions usually when there was a nor'easter. I remember some times seeing him heading up the road on snowshoes. I had a car that was no good in snow. Test your car out, read/search the threads on adding weight in the back/trunk, letting a little air out of the tires, etc. You're accustomed to driving in snow. Make adjustments/purchases/snow decisions after arrival. Enjoy and have fun!
