sometimes culverts connect two bodies of water and if smaller fish swim thru them,,,only makes sense some larger ones might be around- particularly this time of year with run-off

in winthrop on rte 202... there's a culvert at the foot of annabessicook lake,,and had some good luck

Culverts also often have pools on one or both sides, so are good holding places for trout in the spring.

This is true. There are some really great culverts in Maine for fishing. In brooks and small streams, they are often the best place to fish. In smaller brooks, they are often productive well into the summer because they are the deepest part of the brook and might stay a little bit cooler.

I fished many a culvert pool growing up.

Many years ago, I fished the walleye run in the Maumee river in OH. There was a culvert pool off the rapids I was casting. (And loosing tackle regularly with little success.) Nearby at the culvert, with a net at the end of it, several youngsters were having a grand time scooping them and filling a cooler.

Oh, there are adults here that do the same thing. They follow the stocking trucks and throw the fish in a barrel in the bed of their pickup.

"fish in a barrel".......So that's where that easy expression started At that time, as snagging is not allowed, risky business.

Culverts can be great. My dad caught 2 6 lb brown trout from a culvert not far from our house (here in Idaho).

Was that a 2.6 pound trout, a 2 pound 6 ounce trout or a 26 pound trout? We need to know this before we head for Idaho.

None of the above?

How 'bout two trout that each weighed six pounds?
