Hi, I'm interested in hearing what the recent costs are in clearing wooded areas,
and how much of that cost may be offset by lumber values, who to call,
any experiences with specific contractors (pm if don't want to post)
etc. -mostly spruce, fir, would keep maples standing.
thanks in advance, Ron

The value you derive from the wood will depend on size, quality and ease of access. If you want to preserve good quality maples you will want to have a harvester with a small to medium size tractor. A good one is Gene Goodine at <lowimpactcut@yahoo.com>. There are others. In addition to your good logs, some poor quality trees should be removed for woods road and can be sold for biomass or hogged fuel.

thanks, NMLM. I need cost guidelines before I get "actual" with anything.
I'm sure he would know who else to call if my job is too big for him.

Loggers around here have been soliciting to cut wood lots, they pay stumpage- IOW, they would pay *you* to cut your trees, but I don't know where you are at, nor do I know anything about calculating the appropriate value for stumpage. You might want to contact a certified logger for more info. (I can give you the contact info for one in the Dixmont area if you are close to here.)
