Thats what I did when I had to fly to Maine, I flew into Manchester and rented a car and drove up to the Portland area--after visiting family we drove over to NH and took the scenic Kankamangas road over to Franconia notch stayed over in sugar hill and then wound our way back down NH thru Concord to Manchester. It was a memorable trip. The Manchester airport is really nice (just the right size--small).
Okay..We got a bit off topic there. But thanks for the travel tips. I am flying into manchester because I have a free ticket from SWA. I understand that AirTran is now flying direct to Portalnd from Baltimore as well. Don't know the costs. I have not considered my accomodation situation yet. I figured that this time of year I would not have a problem finding lodging in Mid-Coast. Am I right? I am now (secretly) planning on spending four days instead of three in the area. I just havn't told the family that yet. I really want to poke around and see some things. I will look at Belfast closely as a starting point. Any advice greatly accepted.

i only passed thru this town recently (swanville) while looking at a large parcel of land on a local pond and am not familiar other than that. i liked it a lot and it seem convenient to everything. i'd give it a look again for sure.
